tardationł (tardashon)

[L. tardatio ( n- ), slowne , tardare, pp. tardatus, hinder, delay, usually seen at the base, root, and lower margin of the lungs. Tardigrada (tär-dig'ra-da), n. pl. [NL. (Illiger, 1811), neut. pl. of L. tardigradus: see tar digrade.] 1. In Illiger's cla ification (1811), the eighth order of mammals, containing the sloths, with which, however, the sloth-bear (Proc hilus) was included. With elimination of this, the term is used for the sloth family and some of the related extinct forms. Compare Grav i grad a. See cuts under as wail and Cholopus. The former [group] consists of the Sloths, or Tardi grad a - remarkable animals, which are confined to the great forests of South America, where they lead a purely arboreal life, suspended by their strong, hooklike claws to the branches of the trees. Huxley , Anat. Vert., p. 283. 2. Water-bears or bear-animalcules, an order of Arachnid a synonymous with Arctisca. (See also Macro bio tidæ.) The order is sometimes raised to the rank of a cla apart from Arach nid a. See cut under Arctisca. tardigrade (tär'di-grād), a. and n. [L. tardi gradus, slow-going, slow-paced, + grade1.] I. a. Same as tarantism. tarentola (ta-ren'tō-lä), n. [It.: see tarantula.] 1. The gecko-lizard Platy dactylus mauritani cus. See tarente.-2. [ cap.] [NL.] A genus of such gecko-lizards.
