prē-raf′ā-el-ī-tizm, n. a style of painting begun in 1847-49 by D. G. Ro etti, W. Holman Hunt, J. E. Mill a is, and others in imitation of the painters who lived before Raphael (1483-1523), and characterised by a truthful, almost rigid, adherence to natural forms and effects—also Preraph′aelism .— adj. Preraph′aelite , pertaining to, or resembling, the style of art before the time of Raphael—also n. — adj. Preraph′aelitish .
