D.D. (University of Edinburgh, 1883), Church of England; b. at Derby, Eng., Sept. 4, 1835; educated at Pembroke College, Oxford; graduated B.A. (second-cla cla ics) 1857, M. A. 1867; won theological prize e ay, 1858; was ordained deacon 1858, priest 1859 between 1859 and 1866 was profe or of cla ics in Trinity College, Toronto, Can.; rector of the High School, Quebec; fellow of McGill University, Montreal; became vice-principal of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, Eng., 1867; in addition, since 1883 has been rector of Purleigh, and since 1884 secretary to the boards of faculties, and reader in ecclesiastical history, Oxford. He was master of the schools, 1868, 1869, 1873, 1877; Bampton lecturer, 1880; Grin field lecturer in the Septuagint, 1882-84. He is the author of The Student's Handbook to the University and Colleges of Oxford, London, 1873, 7th ed. 1883; The Organization of the Early Christian Church (Bampton Lectures), 1881, 2d ed. 1882 (German trans., Die Gesellschafts ver fas sung der christ lichen Kirchen im Alterthum, Vom Verfa er autoris.
