Meta Compounds
Chandler's Encyclopedia · 1898 · p. 58
The di-substitution products derived from benzene form three series called ortho, meta and para. Thus from benzene three dich lor benzenes are derived. If we consider that the six atoms of carbon in benzene are united in a ring with a hydrogen atom attached to each carbon, then three forms only will be po ible, represented conventionally thus: IMG:content-1329.png:[blocks in formation] Thus three dich lor benzenes are theoretically po ible, and three are in fact known. Similarly, all di-derivatives of benzene as di-methyl, di-brom, di-hydroxyl benzenes, must fall into these series.
