[PLUVIOMETER.] plû-vi-a-mět-ric-al, a. [PLUVIOMETRICAL.] plu-vi-a-něl-lus, subst. [Mod. Lat., dim. from pluvian us (q. v.).] Ornith.: A genus of Charadriide, or, in cla ifications in which that family is divided, of Strepsilatinse (q. v.). It contains a single species, from the Straits of Magellan. plu-vi-ā-nuŭs, s. [Latin pluvia = rain.] [PLO VER.] Ornith.: Crocodile-bird; a genus of Glareolide, with one species, Pluvian us ægyptius , from North Africa. It is a small bird, with plumage of delicate lavender and cream-color, relieved by markings of black and white. Formerly cla ed with either Cursor i us or Charadrius, or made a separate genus Hyas. It is perhaps the trochi los of Hero dot us (ii. 68), which was said to clear the mouth of the crocodile from leeches. plû-vi-om-ě-ter, subst . [Lat. pluvia rain, and Eng. meter.] An instrument for ascertaining the amount of rainfall in a particular climate or place; a rain-gauge (q. v.). plu-vi-o-mět-ric-al, a .
