Illustrated Marine Encyclopedia · 1890 · p. 22
A sailing ve el or steamer specially constructed and install a ted with tanks for carrying petroleum etc. in bulk. The hold and tween-decks of such ve els are divided into numerous compartments by transversal and longitudinal bulkheads, forming receptacles for the oil, which is put-into and discharged from them by the use of steam-pumps working on shore. As by this means either of these operations is effected with great dispatch; it offers considerable advantage over ve els loading petroleum in barrels. *
