Catechu

An extract prepared from the wood of Acacia catechu, a native of the East Indies. It contains 5° Per cent, of tannic acid, and hence is a powerful astringent. It is used for the diarrhea of children and as a gargle and mouth-wash. Dose of the powdered extract gr. j- 3 . See also Pigments, Conspectus of. C, Infusum (B. P.). Dose C., Pulv. Comp. (B. P.). Contains catechu, kino, and rhatany. Dose gr. C, Tinct. Compos it a, contains catechu 10, ca ia cinnamon 5, dilute alcohol q. s. Dose C, Trochi sci, each contains one grain of catechu with sugar, tragacanth, and orange-flower water.
