trachurus

[Gr. trachys =rough, and our a =tail.] Ichthy .: An old genus of Carangide, now gen erally merged in Scomber (the type-genus of Scombride). Trachurus trachurus is the Horse-mackerel. It is about a foot long, or about the length of the common mackerel, and is found in the European seas, at the Cape of Good Hope, in the Indian Ocean, on the coasts of New Zealand and Western America. It appears off the shores of Cornwall and Devon in immense shoals, which are preyed on by a large number of marine birds. Its flesh is far inferior to that of the common mackerel.
