In Zopf's cla ification of the Schizomycetes, a group comprising the genera Bacterium, Spirillum, Vibrio, Leuco nostoc, Bacillus, and Clostridium, which occur in the forms of micrococci, rods (either straight or bent), or filaments (straight or spiral), the latter presenting no differentiation between base and apex. Division takes place in one direction of space only. Reproduction by spores is present in some cases, absent or unknown in others. J. Kiinstler places them in a position intermediate between the animal and vegetable kingdoms, regarding them as most closely related to the astomous F'lagetlata.
