PHILIP II

OF Spain was born in 1527, and married Mary of England in 1554, and her troops helped to win the battle of St. Quentin, against the French, in 1557. *n the revolt of the Netherlands led to their separation from the Spanish crown and the formation of the Dutch Republic but in 1580 his troops, under Alva, subdued Portugal,; of which Philip became sovereign. In 1586 he declared war with England, and in 1588 his " Armada ” was destroyed. He died in 1598.
