While a notable figure in the ecclesiastical world, he became known chiefly to the British and American public as an author under the name of John Ayscough, both as a writer of books and as contributor to magazines and reviews. Under his real name he wrote The Life and Letters of Edward Bickers teth, D.D.; Citizens All (1918); and edited Preachers of the Age (churchmen) series.
