The sustained tone (organ-tone) is obtained by adding to 170 SALICET—SA ach unison a fourth string, which is set in continuous vibration by the rapid blows of an harmonium-reed furnished with a leathern head; the action of these reeds (whose vibration-numbers coincide with those of the corresponding unisons struck by the ordinary hammers) is controlled by wind, supplied by bellows filled by a pair of treadles worked by the player.—By means of various stops and combinations, the S can be played (1) as a pfte.; (2) as an organ; By with pfte.-tone and or gant one combined; (4) the ba side as an organ, and’ the treble side as pfte., or vice vers a; (5) with crescende and decrescendo effects, and all imaginable gradations of tone-power.—The combined timbre partakes of the qualities of the string-band, organ, and pfte. —Built in 2 styles, upright and grand.
