air casing (ark a sing)

An air-tight casing of sheet-iron placed around a pipe to prevent undue transmi ion of heat or cold; specifically, the casing placed around the base of the funnel or smoke-stack of a steamship, to prevent too great a transmi ion of heat to the deck. air-castle (ar'kas"l), n.
