Chancery

(chăn's ur-e.) [From L. can cellar i us, the judge of a court.] (Law.) In England, the highest judicial tribunal, presided over by the Lord Chancellor, and determining, for the most part, cases of equity. In the U. States, Court of C. and Court of Equity are constantly used as synonymous terms. Separate courts of C. or equity exist in a few of the States; in others, the courts of law sit also as courts of equity. [s. 164]
