Dun donald

THOMAS COCHRANE, 10th EARL OF, (dun donald,) an English seaman, B. 1775. Entering the navy aboy, he early distinguished himself by the destruction of the French fleet in Basque Roads by fireships, 1809. A prominent liberal in politics, he suffered fine and imprisonment at the hands of Lord Liverpool's govt., 1814. As commander-in-chief of the Chilian navy, 1818-22, he secured the independence of Chili, and, in 1823, having offered his services to Brazil in her war against Portugal, he swept the Portuguese fleet from Brazilian waters. In 1827 he commanded the Greek navy in the war of independence. After the acce ion of Queen Victoria, he was restored to his full rank and honors in the English navy.
