Davis, Jefferson

Ky., 1808-1889. President of the Confederate States. After the fall of the Confederacy, in 1865, he was confined as a prisoner of war in Fortre Monroe, and upon his release, in 1867, he lived in retirement in Mi i ippi. His history, which appeared in 1881, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, is a valuable commentary on the Civil War as it appeared to one of the chief figures of the time, but it is as narrowly conceived as it is diffuse in statement and bitter in tone.
