Horse Racing

Although chariot racing was one of the ancient Greek games, horses were not raced under saddle till the 33d Olympiad. In England the sport has always been popular with all cla es since the tenth century, and several kings have tried to improve the breed of race-horses. The Chester races were established 1571 and in the reign of James I. The first racing calendar was published 1727 and the Jockey Club founded 1750. Courses were established at Ascot 1727, Don caster 1776, and Good wood 1802. In U. S. horse racing began in colonial times, and is now practiced throughout the country. The highest records of speed for one mile against time in U. S. are: running, Salvator 1.354, 1890; trotting, Alix 2.034, 1894; pacing, Robert J. 2.014, 1894; pacing with running mate, Flying Jib 1.584, 1894; team, Belle Hamlın and Justine 2.124, 1892.
