Orizaba

or Orizava, (o-re-zah'bah,) a city of Mexico, 70 m. W.S.W. of Vera Cruz. Pop. 16,000. The volcanic peak of same name, 25 m. distant, has an altitude of17,380ft. Orkney and Shetland Islands, (The,) (õrk'ne,) an archipelago situate to the N. of the coast of Scotland, bet. N. Lat. 58° 44′-59° 24', W, Lon. 2° 25′-3° 20′. They number altogether 49 islands and islets, chief of which is Pomona. Area, 2,448 sq. m. Deep-sea fishing is the principal industry of the in hab. C. Kirkwall. The Shetlands (or Zetlands) (anc. Ultima Thule) are separated from the Orcadian group by a strait 48 m. in breadth; bet. N. Lat. 59° 52′-60° 50′, W. Lon. 0° 44′-1° 44'. They number 117, 87 of them being uninhabited. Area, 5,388 sq. m. The horses, or rather shaggy ponies, known as Shetlands, or Shelties, are widely celebrated. C. Lerwick. United pop. 62,877. [s. 669]
