The resistance type of governor causes the adjustment of the steam valve to follow the change of resistance which is offered by change of speed to the motion of a paddle-wheel or propeller in oil. In the paddle-wheel type the wheel turning in oil tends to carry the oil round with wheel. The oil tends to turn its enveloping casing; this tendency is opposed by a weight, which also adjusts the steam opening. In the propeller type, the oil tends to thrust the spindle lengthwise, with a force which is a function of the speed. This tendency again is opposed by a weight, and serves to adjust the steam opening.
