(1807-1859), of New Jersey, journalist, an active anti-clavery agitator. From 1836 to 1844 he, with James G. Birney, published the Cincinnati Philanthropist, whose publication office was three times sacked by « mob, and, from 1847 till his death, the National £ra at Washington, in which ‘‘Uncle Tom's Cabin’’ originally appeared.
