IMG:p273_5.png:Chinese characters Hsi p'o, is called by Chinese black amber. A Chinese writer in the 7th century stated that it was dug out of the desert 300 li south of Hsi chow near Turfan. A Chinese physician of the 11th century says it was found 100 feet deep in the soil in the district of Kiao ho. This was transported to China and lasted till the 11th century when the supply ceased. A powder made from it was much prized for its medicinal virtues.
