[After the Pini adit, at Schneeberg, Saxony; suff.ite ( Min.).] Min.: An amorphous mineral, only found in crystals as pseudomorphs. Hardne , 2-5-3-5; specific gravity, 2-6-2-85; luster, feeble, waxlike; color, shades of green, brownish, reddish; translucent to opaque. Composition: E entially a hydrous silicate of alumina with alkalies, the proportions being very variable. The varieties included by Dana are: (1) Pinite, pseudomorphous after Iolite (q.v.); (2) Gieseckite, pseudomorphous after nepheline (q. v.); the sub-varieties of which are (6) Lythrodes, (c) lie be nerite, ( d ) dysyntribite, ( e ) para green mineral from Grin del wald, near par ophite, (g) pinitoid; (3) Wilsonite, pseudomor pho us after scapolite; (4) polyargite and rosite, pseudomorphous after anorthite; (5) killinite, pseudomorphous after spodumene; (6) some varieties of lithomarge; (7) agalmatolite ( b ) on cosine, (c) oõsite, (d) gongylite; (8) gig an to lite, ( b ) iberite. British Mus. Cat . places the whole of the above with the group of Pseudomorphs. from the cut or peaked edges of the petals [PINK (1), v .), or from a resemblance to a bud or small eye [PINK, a.]. Of about seventy known species, the majority are cultivated in gardens; spec if., Dianthus plumarius , the Gar den-pink. branched; leaves linear and subulate, rough at the margins; peduncles three on a stem, with solitary flowers; calyx scales shortly mucronate; the petals digitate, single or double, multifid to the middle, white, pink, spotted, or variegated, and sweet scented.
