an′thraks, n. a widely distributed and very destructive disease, most common among sheep and cattle, the first infectious disease proved to be due to the presence of microscopic vegetable organisms ( bacilli )—other names are Splenic Apoplexy , Splenic Fever , and as it occurs in man, Malignant Pustule and Woolsorter's Disease : a carbuncle or malignant boil.— adjs.
