Sanguinaria

(sang-gwin-a’ ’-re-ah) [sanguis, blood]. Blood-root, a genus of plants of the order Papaveraceae. The rhizome of S. can a dens is (Sanguinaria, U. S. P.) contains several alkaloids, of which sanguinarin, C20H15NO4, is the most important; it is emetic and narcotic; in large doses an irritant and convulsant.
