fructose (fruktos)

[L. fructus, fruit, + -ose.] In chem., sugar of fruit, or levulose (C6H1206). It is found in honey and sweet fruits, and is one of the products of the inversion of cane-sugar. It usually exists as a colorle syrup, but can be crystallized. It is easily soluble in water and alcohol, and polarizes to the left. Also called fruit - sugar and chulariose. fructual (fruktū-al), a.
