TAPESTRY

(Fr. tapi erie.) An ornamental figured textile fabric of worsted or silk for lining the walls of apartments. The most celebrated manufacture of this kind is produced at the Gobelins royal manufactory, near Paris. In Painting, tapestry is applied to a representation of a subject in wool or silk, or both, worked on a woven ground of hemp or flax. [s. 1220]
