(str a’tum), pl. str a’ta [L.]. A layer or set of layers, as in the epidermis. 8s. albocine’- reum, a twofold layer of white and gray matter within the striatum. Arlt’s 8s. See stratum reliculatum. 8. bacillo’rum, the layer of rods and cones in the retina. s. cine’reum, the uppermost of the three layers of the corpus quadrigeminum. 8. compac’tum, the superficial layer of the decidua basal is. 8. cor’neum, the outermost or horny layer of the epidermis. See skin. Β. cor‘neum un’guis, the horny layer of the nail. s. cylin’dricum, stratum malpighii. s. dent a’tum, stratum malpighii. s. disjunc’- tum, a layer of partially detached cells on the free surface of the stratum corneum. 8. dorsa’le, one of the layers representing the prolongation of the tegmentum beneath the posterior part of the optic thalamus. 8. fibro’sum, the outer layer of the capsular ligament of a joint. s. fila men to’- sum, stratum malpighii. s. ganglion a’re, the nerve-cell layer, or second layer from within, of the retina. 8. gelati no’sum, the innermost of the four layers of the olfactory Jobe. It includes the many varieties, such as Streptococcus pyog’encs, S. erysipel’at is, S. articslo’'rum, S. sep'tic us, and S. sept i copy a’ mic us. 8. lu’cwxs, a pathogenic species from soft chancre: seen in chains of minute cocci. It is also known as Bacillus ul’ ceris cancro’si. §.margarita’ceus, a species from putrid blood: in loose chains of spheric cells. S. mast i’tid is sporad’icm, a species found in the mastitis of cattle. 8. mening it’idis, a pathogenic species from cerebrospinal meningitis and from pulmonary apoplexy in long chains of rounded, oval cells. mesente Oi’des, a species found in beets and sugar solutions, occurring in the form of cocci inclosed in a capsule and arranged in chains., It causes the dextrin fermentation of cane sugar. 8. mirab’ilis, a saprophytic species from sewage. 8. monomor’phus, a species from pharyngeal ulcers. 8. morbillo’ sus, a species from measles: in large, spheric cocci. 8. muco’sus, a capsulated species found in a case of tubo-ovarian absce with peritonitis. It causes mucous exudations in animals. 8. nocardi, a pathogenic species from cows and goats affected with chronic infectious inflammation of the udder. 8. no’ms, a species from cases of noma: seen as cocci. 8. ochroleu’cus, a chromogenic species from the urine, occurring as single or paired cocci or in chains. 8. of O Ostertag, a species causing vaginitis verrucosa in cattle. 8. per it on it‘idis e’qui, a pathogenic species from horses which died of peritonitis. pernicio’si psittaco’‘rum, 8. psit’taci, a pathogenic species from disease of gray parrots, found in the heart and lungs in the form of cocci in chains. 8. pneumo‘nia. Same as Diplococcus pneumoniae. 8. pyo’genes, a pathogenic species from progre ive _ ery: sipelatoid suppurations in chains of cocci. pyo’genes malig’nus, a pathogenic form from necrotic foci in the spleen of leukemia; closely resembling S. erysipel’at is. 8. rindfleisch’ii, a species from the blood in mycosis fungoides, in the form of colorle cells in chains. 8. saliva’rius, a species found in the saliva and in the alimentary tract in malignant endocarditis and certain terminal infections. 8. seifer’- ti, a species from the nasal mucus and sputum of influenza, in long chains of oval cells. 8S. sep’tic us, a pathogenic species from foul earth: seen in chains of pairs of cocci.. sep’- tic us liquefa’ciens, a pathogenic species from blood of septic poisoning after scarlatina: seen irs or chains of round cocci. 8. septopyse’- mic us, a pathogenic form from cases of phlegmonous angina. 8. suspec’tus, a species from blood and spleen of cattle affected with hematuria: seen as colorle , spheric cells. 8. toxic a‘tus, a species from an infusion of Rhus toxicoden'dron: said to produce one of the poisons of poison-ivy. §. tyro’genes, a species found in ripe cheese. 8. u're®, a species from air and from stale urine; cocci in chains, wreaths. or pairs: it changes urea into ammonium carbonate. 8. ures Hquets’ ciens, a zymogenic form from urine. 8S. va’rians, a species from water, producing a green pigment.
