He entered the United States navy as a midshipman in 1833, and served in the Seminole and Mexican wars, being promoted commander in 1861. He was fleet-captain in the Wabash of Admiral Du Pont's fleet at the battle of Port Royal in 1861; commanded an expedition to St. Augustine and up St. Mary's River in 1862; and was fleet-captain in the New Ironsides in the attack on the defenses of Charleston April 7, 1863.
