ancient cla ic a. name of the Dardanelles, the strait connecting the Sea of Marmora and the Aigean Sea; so called from Hellé, d. of Athamas and Nephele, who, fleeing from the cruelty of her stepmother, Ino, fell from the air into the strait and was drowned.
