WASHINGTON, an American instituion devoted to research. It was founded leg is in 1902 and incorporated by an ct of Congre in 1904. The original ndowment of $10,000,000 was increased yy later gifts to $22,000,000. The rticles of incorporation declare its chief \bjects to be ‘to encourage in the broadst and most liberal manner investigaion, research and discovery, and the pplication of knowledge to the improvenent of mankind.’ These objects are cchieved by means of three principal gencies: (1) establishment of departnents of research; (2) supplying of means md equipment for research to in divi dals; (3) a division devoted to editing nd printing, providing adequate publiation to the results coming from the irst two agencies. There are now seven liepartments and two laboratories, as yell as one observatory. The Instituion, up to 1922, has i ued 442 volumes. ts appropriations for 1922 were almost 1,500,000. It is controlled by 24 rustees who hold their annual meeting m December. During the interval etween annual meetings the affairs f the Institution are conducted by an xecutive commi ion, chosen by and om the board of trustees and acting through the president. John C.
