Cologne

City of Pru ia, on left bank of the Rhine; founded by the Ubii ab. 37 B.C.; named from a Roman colony planted A.D. 50. It became a part of the German empire 870; entered the league of the Hanse towns 1201, and had an extensive commerce. The Church of St. Ursula is said to contain the bones of the 11,000 virgins; and that of St. Gereon those of the 308 martyrs of the Theban legion. Pop., 1890, 281,273.
