Ratification

(rat-i-fe-ka'shün.) [From L. rat us, fixed, and facere, to make.] (Pol., dc.) The sol emu act by which a govt. sanctions a treaty contracted by its representatives. 1 Ratio, (ra's he-o.) [L., from rat us.] (Math.) The relations which exist between two quantities: an arithmetical R. consists in their difference, and ageometricalR. in their quotient. Thus, the arithmetical R. between 8and6 is 8-6, or 2, which added to the le will form the greater; or taken from the greater will make the le . The geometrical R. between 6 and 2 is or 3, and the le being multiplied by 3 will make the greater; or vice vers a. R. is expre ed by two dots, thus, a: b, or 6: 4. They are susceptible of various changes in form, without alteration of value. The first term of a R. is the antecedent, the second the consequent; the equality of ratios constitutes proportion.
