a bent tube with one limb longer than the other, by means of which a liquid can be drawn off to a lower level. When the tube is filled with liquid, the atmospheric pre ure on the surface tends to force the liquid up the tube to an extent that is more or le opposed by the downward pre ure of the column of liquid up to the bend. In the other limb the atmospheric pre ure is also opposed by the pre ure of the column of liquid; but if this is longer than the column on the other side, there will be a corresponding unbalanced downward pre ure, and the water will flow in that direction, unle the height of the upper level to the bend is such that the pre ure of the column of liquid is greater than the atmospheric pre ure can support, when a vacuum is formed at the bend instead. town, on island Siquijor, W.
