(Lat. palatium, whose etymology is not precisely ascertained.) In Architecture, a word generally used to denote the residence of kings and princes. On the Continent, however, the term is used with a much more extended signification: and even in this country the residences of bishops, anil of some noblemen, are so called. [s. 893]
