(1) John, b. Girl ing ton, June 29, 1865—North wood, Aug. 16, 1941; tenor; sang choir at 5; pupil of Burton and Bridge, later of Shakespeare; sang in light opera, London and America, as barytone, 18931899; decided he was a tenor; studied and made début, 1900, at Covent Garden; favourite festival tenor; also in opera in Germany and 1910 chief tenor at Beecham’s season. (2) Albert, b. St. Petersburg, Ru ia, April 23, 1882; of English parents; versatile conductor and composer; studied piano with Carrefio, conducting with Nikisch; after baton experience in opera at Elberfeld, Dresden, Mannheim and Covent Garden (1914), he became dir. of the St. Op., 1914-17, tinued in this post under the Soviets until 1918, subsequently returning engagements; has also appeared with Beecham and British Nat’l. Op. Cos., with Covent Garden Op. Syndicate, Royal Philh. and London Symph. Orchs.; in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, in Spain, Italy and Scand in a via; in U. S. with N. Y. Symph. (1921), Rochester Philh. (1921-22), N. Y. Stadium and (1928-30); c. (operas) “‘Sardana pol us”’ (St. Petersburg, 1916), ‘Samuel Pepys” (Munich, 1930); ‘“‘Pickwick”; also a “ Launce lot”’ Symphony (N. Y. Philh. Stadium Concerts, 1930). (3) Eric, b. Hucknall, England, Aug. 27, 1886; composer; studied at R. Coll. of Mus., viola with Tertis. comp. with Corder; played with Hamburg String Quartet and in Queen’s Hall Orch.; after 1918 devoted himself increasingly to composition, esp. orch. music and songs.
