John ( son of John Elmsley 1762–1805, speaker of legislative council of Lower Canada ). b. Elmsley house, Toronto 1801; entered British navy 1815, lieut. 1824; member of legislative council of Upper Canada until union of two provinces 1840; joined Church of Rome; established House of Providence at Toronto, and the first Roman Catholic school in Upper Canada; chief founder of College of St. Michael in Toronto. d.
