(Blume, 1828), so called with ref. to its supposed healing properties; πολυαλθής , healing many dis- eases, πολύς , many, + ἀλθαίνειν , heal (> ἀλθήεις , wholesome).] A genus of polypetalous shrubs or trees of the order Anonaceæ and tribe Uno- neæ , characterized by six thick, flat, ovate or IMG:content-0577.png:[blocks in formation] polyanthus, polyanthos (pol-i-an'thus, thos), [NL., Gr. πολύανθος, having many flowers: n. see poly an thous.] A garden variety of Primula ver is, most nearly allied to the variety elatior, the oxlip, whose flowers are umbeled on a common peduncle several inches high. It is an old garden favorite, which has pa ed through countle subvarieties. Florists require that a good polyanthus should po e a strong scape, a well-filled tru , a corolla with a short tube, a bright-yellow eye, and a deep, rich brown-crimson limb, bordered with a well-defined yellow edging.
