Bayonne

(bai-yon',) a strongly fortified city of France, dep. Ba es-Pyrénées, at the confluence of the Neve with the Adour, 3 m. from the embouchure of the latter, and 18 m. from the Spanish frontier; Lat. 43° 29′ 29" N., Lon. 1° 28′ 33″ W. It is well built, agreeably situated, and has a citadel which is one of the finest works of Vauban. Pop. 27,512.- Treaty of B. See CHARLES IV. (of Spain.) [s. 81]
