CH,.COCl. Combination of the acetyl group with chlorine. Colorle , fuming liquid, changed by water into acetic acid and hydrochloric acid. Prepared by the action of the phosphorus chlorides upon acetates and acetic acid. Very much used for introducing acetyl into compounds. Acetylene. CH:CH. Gaseous hydrocarbon formed by the imperfect combustion of illuminating gas. It has an unpleasant, characteristic odor. Combines with chlorine and bromine. The hydrogen can be replaced with certain metals, as copper and silver. These compounds are very explosive.
