Gypsies

Wandering hordes of supposed Hindu origin, that first appeared in w. Europe 1417, and are now spread over the world. Called Bohemians by the French, Egyptians (corrupted into Gypsy) by the English, and by themselves Rommany. Their language contains ab. 5,000 words. They probably en IMG:content-0454.png:[merged small][graphic][merged small] wings have at the center a kidney-shaped spot. Eggs are laid in clusters in protected crevices in midsummer, and hatch in spring or early summer into blackheaded larvæ, two inches long when full grown, dark colored, hairy, and having blue and red tubercles on each segment.
