[ II. n.; pl. stipendiaries (-riz). 1. One who performs services for a settled payment, salary, or stipend.-2. A stipendiary magistrate. See under I.-3. In law , a feudatory owing services to his lord. stipular stipe2.-2. In zoöl., a stalk or stem, as an eyestalk or a footstalk; a stipe. Specifically - (a) In entom., the footstalk of the maxilla of an insect, the outer or main division of that organ; the second joint of the maxilla, borne upon the car do, and through the palpifer and subgalea bearing the palpus, galea, and lacinia, when these organs exist. (b) In Myriapod a: (1) The proximal or median one of two pieces of which the pro to mala, or so-called mandible, consists, the other being the car do. See pro to mala, and figure under epilabrum.
