ROOT-SHEATH

n. Rut's heth. Ger., Wurzdscheide. 1. A cutieular covering of the root of an organ, [a, 48.] 2. The protecting sheath of firmer ti ue at the tip of a root, which enables the latter the more easily to penetrate the soil. [B, 291. 296 (a, 35).] Inner r.-s. of a hair. A layer, in the root of a hair, lying immediately external to its cuticle and made up of Henle's and Huxley's layers (q. v.) and a very delicate cuticle. [L.] Outer r.-s. of a hair. A layer of stratified epithelium, similar to the stratum Malpighii of the skin, immediately beneath the glo y membrane of a hair follicle. [L, 351.] [s. 413]
