Feejee

or Fiji Islands, (feje,) a group of 200 islands in the S. Pacific Ocean, 65 of which have populations; they lie bet. S. Lat. 15° 30′- 20° 30′, and W. Lon. 177-1780. Of volcanic origin, they po e soil fertile in the extreme, producing sugar and fruits. Pop abt. 150,000, generally in a state of entire barbarism. In 1874 these islands pa ed under the sovereignty of England. [s. 358]
