pellagra

[Ital. pelle =the skin, and agra, fem. of agro =rough.] Pathol.: A disease common among the peasantry of northern Italy, the Asturias, Gascony, Roumania, and Corfu, caused by living on maize affected by a parasitic fungus. It is not morbus miser iæ pure and simple, as it is entirely absent from certain zones where such diseases undoubtedly exist. It commences by the appearance of a shining red spot on some part of the body, the skin becomes dry and cracks, and the epidermis falls off in white branliko scales, leaving a shining redne as before. pěl-la-grin, subst .
