[= F. périapte = It. periapto , per i at to , περίαπτον , an amulet; prop. neut. of περίαπτος , hung round, ἀπτός , verbal adj. of ἀπτειν , fasten.] An amulet; a charm worn as a defense against disease or mischief, especially one worn on the person, as around the neck. Now help, ye charming spells and periapts . Shak ., 1 Hen. VI., v. 3. 2. per i arteritis (per-i-är-te-ri'tis), n. [NL., Gr. περί , around, + ἀρτηρία , an artery, + -it is. Cf. arteritis .] Inflammation of the adventitia or outer coat of an artery. per i arthritis (per"i-är-thritis), n. Surrounding the axis-cylinder of a nerve: as, per i axial fluid. periblast (per'i-blast), n . [ περί , around, + βλαστός, a germ.] Cell-substance of an ovum surrounding the nucleus. periblastic (per-i-blas'tik), a. [ periblast + -ic.] Germinating from the surface of the ovum: noting those meroblastic eggs which, by superficial segmentation of the vitellus, produce a per i gastrula in germinating. per i blastula (per-i-blas tū-la), n.; pl. periblas tulæ (-lē).
