Era

of Good Feeling, a name applied to the period between 1817 and 1823, during Monroe’s administration, when national political contests were suspended, the Democrats having a triumphant majority and the Federalist party being almost extinct. The War of 1812 was ended and the new i ues of tariff and internal improvement had not arisen. Monroe’s inaugural addre soothed the few Federalists and the leaders of both parties joined in receiving the President and announcing the “era of good feeling.”
