menopoma

[Gr. menō -to remain, to be unchanged, and pom a =alid, a cover.] Zool .: The typical genus of the family Menopomidse (q.v.). It contains but a single genus, Mem bender. Found in the Alleghany and its tributaries, pom a alleghaniensis , popularly known as the Hell Length, from eighteen to twenty-four inches; pale slate-color, mottled with dusky tints. The neck has a single gill-cleft on each side. The fore-limbs are short, thick, and fringed. There are four fingers and five webbed toes. It is carnivorous and very voracious, feeding on fish, mollusks, and worms. měn-o-pome, s. [MENOPOMA.] Any individual of the genus Menopoma (q. v.).
