The portion of the ship's bottom formed by the floor timbers. dead-ropes, s. pl. B. As subst.: The name given to that inland sea in the Holy Land covering the sites of Sodom and Gomorrah. It is about forty-six miles long by ten and a third broad. Its waters are intensely bitter. Asphalt is found along its shores, whence it ac quired the name of Lacus asphaltites . It is 1,317 feet below the level of the Mediterranean.
