[Etym. doubtful.] Bot .: A genus of Convolvulese. Pharbitis cathar . tic a, a St. Domingo plant, furnishes a resin like scammony. The seeds of P. cærule a , given in doses of thirty to forty grains, are cathartic. *phäre, s . It is the first five kinds to whom the rebukes of Christ refer, and who have given rise to the term Pharisee being used as syn- onymous with a strict observer of external forms of religion without the spirit of it.
