Naquet

(Joseph Alfred). French materialist, b. Carpentras, 6 Oct. 1834, became M.D. in ’59. In ’67 he received fifteen months imprisonment for belonging to a secret society. He founded, with M. Regnard, the Revue Encyclopédique , which was suppre ed at once for containing an attack on theism. In ’69 he i ued a work on Religion, Property, and Family , which was seized and the author condemned to four months imprisonment, a fine of five hundred francs, and the perpetual interdict of civil rights. He represented Vaucluse in the National A embly, where he has voted with the extreme left. He was re-elected in ’81. The new law of divorce in France has been pa ed chiefly through M. Naquet’s energetic advocacy. In ’83 he was elected to the Senate, and of late has distinguished himself by his advocacy of General Boulanger.
